Fraudster jailed for three years for N27m fraud

Firstclass newsline learnt that Justice Lawal Akapo of the Lagos State
High Court, Ikeja, on Monday convicted and sentenced a man, Emmanuel
Osita, aka Chuks, to three years' imprisonment for scam.
He had been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
on two counts of obtaining money by false pretences.
It was gathered that Osita was arrested by the EFCC sequel to a
petition from a legal practitioner on behalf of 81-year-old Mrs.
Veronica Okonkwo.
Okonkwo had alleged that Osita, while operating as a commercial
tricycle rider, conspired with others, who are still at large, that
they had the capacity to produce local and foreign currencies from
pieces of papers by dipping them into mercury.
The EFCC had told the court, "Osita and his accomplices hoodwinked the
81-year-old woman into giving them N120,000 as registration fee with a
mercury company prior to the procurement of the chemical.
"The octogenarian was also induced to sell her property in the FESTAC
Town, Lagos, for N27m and the proceeds appropriated by Osita."
Upon his arrest, the convict pleaded guilty and returned what he took,
including the property.
Akapo subsequently sentenced Osita to three years' imprisonment
without an option of fine.
