Yeni glanced at the calendar, then at his wristwatch and sighed. Why did his heart skip three beats every time he thought about that day, two years ago.

He knew Aisha loved him beyond what he could express but still felt this tug when he thought of the fact that she was going to Lagos State for her NYSC. He slapped his forehead and winced slightly. To think he was still in his third year and she was going for service.

Would she wait? Would she remain faithful? Would she think he was no longer good enough after she met those nonsense Lagos guys? How would he stand up to the competition if he went to visit? Should he lie about his status? Too many thoughts fought for his attention and he suddenly flopped on the bed and screamed.

Aisha was in the living room with his mother and sister, looking at samples of wedding shoes in a catalogue. Moments later, she was at his side, worry written all over her face.

Yeni opened his eyes, smiled, drew his bride to his side and kissed her senseless.

Not many people can convincingly explain what true love really entails in its entirety. It is however important to have an idea of some of its essentials. Many times in a relationship, doubts are entertained and these are quite normal, depending on the frequency of doubtful thoughts. In other instances, the couples find themselves in relationships of short term convenience and become so scared of letting their partners breathe and end up stifling themselves out of the relationship. To have a successful relationship, it is imperative to understand some of the basics of true love. A few necessary pointers are indicated below:

First, become true friends

Before venturing into a relationship, it is important for the couple to start out as good friends. Healthy friendship is a solid footing that gives the couple a good foundation for the relationship. It gives an impartial insight into aspects of their characters that may not be as clear when they become enraptured in love.

Fear nothing
When one is in true love, fear becomes a distant phenomenon. Doubts, in minor doses, are permitted but fear should be nothing to worry about. The fear of a partner leaving, eventual divorce or break up, old age, competition, etc., should be far from the thoughts of the couple. After all, “life is too short to frown long.”

Expect no material gain
True love is not measured by what one expects to gain from the relationship, materially, in the event that it doesn’t work out, because the thought of it not working shouldn’t even be in the picture. True love revolves around absolute selflessness

Make promises
Promises create a sense of responsibility for the couple and increases value for the relationship. Since frequently broken promises are not a good sign, there is the tendency for the couple to strive effortlessly to keep their promises in order to keep love alive. No matter how insurmountable difficulties become, true love always finds a way to make everything fall into place.

Be less manipulative
Manipulations come in various guises. It could be by a partner, a partner’s friends, parents, relatives, or even the couple’s spiritual leader. Manipulation in romantic relationships will only hold the victim down for a while. With time, the manipulator runs out of devices and the manipulated sees through the smoke screen. Imagine the betrayal that would follow.
