Firstclass newsline learnt that a mother who caught her son rioting in Baltimore was caught on film
smacking him and dragging him home by the scruff of the neck.
Hailed as the 'Mother of the Year, the woman was captured live on
television locating her balaclava-clad son and dishing out some
discipline.
The angry Baltimore mom recognized her masked son throwing rocks at
police on television, which didn't sit well with her.
The video shows the mother repeatedly striking her boy, chasing him as
he tries to walk away.
At one point in the clip, just as the young man attempts to walk back
to the riot, the woman is heard yelling: "You wanna be out here doing
this dumb sh*t? Get the f*ck over here. Get over here now. Did you
hear what I said?!"
In a press conference, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts
said he wished there were more parents like the one featured in the
footage.
"In one scene you had a mother who grabbed a child who had a hood on
his head and started smacking him on the head because she was so
embarrassed.
"I wish there were more parents out there who took charge of their
kids tonight.'
The rioting started in West Baltimore yesterday afternoon - within a
mile of where Freddie Gray, 25, was arrested and placed into a police
van earlier this month - and by midnight had spread to East Baltimore
and neighbourhoods close to downtown and near the baseball stadium.
National Guardsmen have fanned out across the city, police with riot
shields blocked streets, and firefighters doused smouldering blazes
after looting and arson erupted.
It was the worst such violence in the US since the turbulent protests
that broke out over the death of Michael Brown, the unarmed black
18-year-old who was shot by a white police officer in Ferguson,
Missouri, last summer.
Aerial footage showed a firefighter spraying the burned-out shell of a
large building.
The city was under a 10pm to 5am curfew beginning today, and all
Baltimore public schools were closed.
UPDATE: The woman was identified as Toya Graham and she was on the
news in the US explaining more about her 'Mother of the Year'
