2015: Tambuwal asks Nigerians to elect good leader

2015: Tambuwal asks Nigerians to elect good leader

The Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, has called on Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or ethnic affinity, to ensure that they elect a good leader for the country in the 2015 general elections.
According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday by Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, a media aide to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the Speaker spoke on Sunday in Lagos at a victory colloquium organised for Aregbesola by an online news organisation.
Tambuwal recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Consequent upon the defection, the ruling PDP has asked Tambuwal to resign his speakership.
“What Nigeria needs urgently is a good leader, one who believes in peace, progress and development of the country and the welfare of the people. Nigerians need to elect a good leader in 2015,” Okanlawon’s statement quoted the Speaker as saying.
Reacting to the withdrawal of the security aides attached to his office by the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Aba, Tambuwal accused the police boss of double standard but said he would not talk much on the issue because he had gone to challenge it in court.
He said he was annoyed by the pronouncement of the IG that he (Tambuwal) should vacate his office having defected from PDP to the APC.
He said, “Recently, the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, defected to PDP alongside the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
“The IGP did not say the Speaker should vacate his seat. Why is he now making such pronouncement in my own case?
“Is it a case of different laws for different people? Anyway, I have gone to court, so I rest my case.”
Aregbesola, while condemning the military coup in Burkina Faso, urged Nigerians to be prepared for the 2015 general elections.
He said that the election would not be easy because the ruling PDP would want to hold on to power by all means.
According to him, what happened in Burkina Faso is a signal to Nigeria and the citizens must be ready to resist military rule.
The governor said, “Political office holders should comport themselves to civil rule in order not to give the military any excuse to take power as military coup is no longer fashionable in Africa.
“The political development in Burkina Faso is one that must be commended by any lover of democracy. The people of Burkina Faso were courageous in their refusal to tolerate a tyrant any further.
“The Burkinabes must carry the revolution to its logical end by forming a national government, which will conduct elections. They should not allow military to take power again in that country for whatever reason.
“And it is pertinent to add that what happened, and that is happening in Burkina Faso is a signal to us in Nigeria. We should gird our loins and prepare for any eventualities that may accompany the February 2015 general elections.
“I say this because the trend in recent time has demonstrated that the election will not come as easy as we may want to think as it is demonstrably clear that PDP will want to use force to retain power.
