Nigeria’ll soon see end of Boko Haram —IGP
The Acting Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has said that
Nigeria will soon see the end of the violent Islamists, Boko Haram.
The IG also told policemen to live up to the challenge of securing the areas affected by Boko Haram insurgents.
Abba spoke on Wednesday when he paid a visit to the Borno State Police Command. He noted that the full implementation
of the police reforms by the 36 states as well as attitudinal change by
officers and men of the Nigerian Police would ensure better policing of
the country.
Abba, who addressed over 1,500 police officers and men
of the Borno State command, described policemen serving in state as
heroes and urged them to be more committed to their duty and fight Boko
Haram insurgency and other criminal activities headlong.
He said,
“As far as I am concerned, all policemen and women and of course the
personnel of various security agencies serving in Borno today are heroes
because of their determination and dedication to support the fight
against violent crimes we have been witnessing in this part of the
country.
“We will never relent in the protection of lives and properties in Nigeria.”
He said his priority as the police IG was to ensure attitudinal change
among the rank and file of the police, build values of hard work,
humility, honesty and patriotisms. He said these should be the main
attributes of policemen in the protection of people’s lives and
property.
Abba said Borno was the first command he would officially
visit since his appointment. He said he had been to Osun and Adamawa
states earlier only for election matters.
The IG said he had served
in Borno as a junior officer in the 80s and that Borno then was a home
of peace with residents engaging freely in social and economic
activities until 2009 when Boko Haram struck.
“Borno was a shining
example of unity in the country as various people of different ethnic
and religious backgrounds co-existed without crisis,” he said.
Governor Kashim Shettima handed over 40 Toyota Hilux vehicles donated by te state government to the IG.
The governor said the IGP visit showed his level of commitment to
tackling insurgency in the North-East. He also commended the Nigerian
Police for the sacrifices their men and officers had made to bring back
peace to the region.
The North-East states have been the hotbed of
Boko Haram insurgency and the insurgents, since 2009, have killed
thousands of victims in attacks on churches, communities, drinking
joints, markets and police and military facilities.
