Firstclass newsline gathered that the Igbo Leaders of Thought led by
foremost lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, on Friday accused President
Muhammadu Buhari of "one-man rule," saying his leadership style had
generated tension in the country.
The group equally condemned the clampdown on Igbo youths who "are
protesting against brazen injustice against Ndigbo."
He said Nigeria's laws "guarantee freedom of expression manifested
particularly in lawful protests as a fundamental right."
In a communiqué issued after deliberating on the state of the country
at a meeting in Enugu, the association said Buhari's style of
leadership had generated problems in the country.
The communiqué was signed by Nwabueze on behalf of other members of the group.
The communiqué read, "President Buhari's one-man rule has generated
much tension in the land, and caused serious retardation of the
economy, social dislocation, insecurity and polarisation along ethnic
and religious lines."
The Igbo leaders also accused Buhari of violating the constitution in
many ways, including the appointments he has made so far.
They asked the President to address the menace posed to other
Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen and urged him to restrict them to cattle
ranches "as is done in all cattle-rearing countries all over the
world".
Similarly, the group condemned the relocation of Boko Haram detainees
to Ekwulobia prisons in Anambra State, in spite of protests by the
people of the state.
The group said, "There is no reason or justification for this act if
it is not to further threaten the security of Anambra people, many of
whom are victims of the sect's violence and have been driven out of
the North-eastern part of the country.
"If the Boko Haram insurgents are awaiting trial, simple logic
dictates that they should be located near the courts in the
North-East.
"In any case such prisoners should not be allowed to contaminate and
endanger the security of non-members of the sect.
"There is a feeling among Ndigbo that these Boko Haram insurgents are
advanced group of Jihadists, just like the Fulani herdsmen roaming
over the South-East, South-West and North-Central, armed with Ak-47
guns."
