Firstclass learnt that the disqualification of a presidential
aspirant of Ebonyi State University Students Union Government, Mr
Chigoziem Nwele, over 2000 students of the institution yesterday
barricaded the popular old Enugu-Abakaliki road in a peaceful protest
alleging that their popular candidate, Nwele was disqualified by the
school authority after being cleared by the Electoral Committee.
Nwele, a third year student of Computer Science was disqualified from
contesting the president of the students union by the school authority
over an alleged rumour that he was a cultist.
The aggrieved candidate, who was contesting the position with other
four aspirants was axed according to a statement signed by Dean of
Students Affairs, Mr. Hillary Eze following a purported report from
the State Security Service that Nwele was a cultist, after reportedly
being cleared by the Police and School Electoral Committee headed by
Dr. Bassey Onwe.
A source gathered that the screening committee cleared him and pasted
his name as qualified, the police also cleared him, only for the
school authority to raise an allegation that the State Security
Service SSS had an issue against him and without further
investigation, disqualified him.
Aggrieved by the development, the students boycotted the election
scheduled to hold on Friday (yesterday) and took to the street
immediately the news that Nwele was disqualified filtered in the
institution chanting solidarity songs to their preferred candidate.
The protest caused heavy traffic gridlock as road users appealed to
the school authority to look into the matter and make sure a level
playing ground was ensured.
The students who conducted themselves in a peaceful manner had
placards with inscriptions Nwele is our choice, VC Idike, allow
justice to prevail among others.
However, all efforts to get the school authority to comment failed but
a senior lecturer who spoke on condition of anonymity accused the Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Idike of complicity, over alleged political and
clannish interest.
