Former Oyo State governor Adebayo Alao-Akala has left Peoples
Democratic Party for Labour Party, where he has re-ignited his
governorship ambition ahead of 2015 elections.
Alao-Akala left the party after Teslim Folarin was elected as PDP
governorship candidate at the party's primary in Ibadan on Moday. The
former governor did not take part in the exercise as he was addressing
his supporters in Ogbomoso while the primary took place. He said the
decision to move to LP was made based on the advice of his supporters.
A meeting took place in his Ibadan home on Monday night with some of
the party leaders who are sympathetic to Alao-Akala's course in
attendance. Media aide to the former governor, Abraham Ojo said that
his boss also quit PDP because of the insincerity and injustice in the
party.
He said, "Thousands of supporters of the former governor stormed his
Bodija residence in Ibadan to deliberate on the way forward after the
injustice meted to him by the PDP. After series of meetings and
discussion, they all decided to leave the PDP and move to an
alternative party which is LP.
Among the party leaders at the meetings are Chief Jacob Adetoro, Chief
Adigun Irawo, past commissioners in the state, past council chairmen
and other politicians.
Abraham said it was also decided that there was no reason for the
group to remain in the PDP because the party had refused to toe the
line of truth.
"Everybody in the state is aware that Alao-Akala and his supporters
are strong pillars that held the party and if a genuine delegate
congress is conducted, he will always win. But since the national
secretariat has given in to the manipulations of the minority in the
party, we have no option than to quit," he added.
