Arewa youths accuse leaders of politicising North’s insecurity
The leadership of the umbrella body of youths in the 19 northern states
and Abuja, the Arewa Youths Forum, on Wednesday asked the Federal
Government to stop politicising the prevailing insecurity in the
country, particularly in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.
After an emergency meeting in Kaduna, the forum lamented the inability of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led government to bring to an end to the insurgents’ activities in the northern states.
AYF’s National President, Alhaji Gambo Gujungu, in a statement made
available to newsmen, said the Federal Government and security
operatives must demonstrate sincerity and political will to tackle the
activities of insurgents in the region, that had been constantly under
the attacks of terrorists.
The forum advocated that all former Heads
of State, northern governors, northern members of the National
Assembly, religious and traditional leaders, academicians, business
class, media owners among others should hold an emergency meeting and
come up with a position to the Nigerian government on practical
solutions to the quagmire in the region.
Gujungu cautioned political
leaders from the region to de-emphasise struggle for political power
and fix the North, socially and economically.
Gujungu said in the
statement, “While the North is burning and heading for a total collapse,
those in position of leadership and those outside are only occupied
with power struggle to the detriment of our survival as a people.
“Federal Government and Nigerian security agencies must as a matter of
national security demonstrate sincerity and political will in tackling
insecurity ravaging the region and halt the menace gradually finding
foot in the whole North.
“Power struggle in northern states should
be de-emphasised in view of our situation for urgent resolution of the
danger and deadly crisis the region has been plunged into. We should
keep politics aside for survival first.
“All the political office
holders are more interested in political office forgetting that if your
house is not in order, you can’t govern well.”
