Mbu Detains AIT Reporter, Anakwe for Calling Him Controversial
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 7,
Abuja, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, has arrested the presenter of Matters Arising
on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Mr. Amaechi Anakwue, for
describing him as controversial.
Anakwue was said to have described the former Rivers State Commissioner of Police (CP) as controversial in one of his presentations earlier this week, but this did not go down well with the officer.
The reference, it was gathered, might not be unconnected with Mbu’s
activities in Rivers State, where he was accused of carrying out orders
from the presidency against the state governor and allies.
Anakwue,
who was said to have been invited early thursday by Mbu for questioning,
was immediately arrested and detained after he was harassed by the
police.
As at the writing of this report, the journalist was still
being held by the AIG despite calls from different quarters for his
release.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ), AIT chapter and
the management of the television station had called for the immediate
and unconditional release of Anakwue.
All efforts to get the AIG and
his Public Relations Officer (PRO) for comment proved abortive as both
officers refused to see or pick several calls put to them by our source
