Lagos drivers to get license in two hours, says Opeifa
Reliefmay be on its way for motorists in Lagos as the state government,
on Tuesday, revealed plans to reduce the cumbersome process associated
with processing drivers’ license and ensure that henceforth, drivers can
process and get their licenses in just two hours.
The state government also said about 302,000 drivers’ licenses were fully processed
in the state from 2011, adding that about 194, 000 applicants of the
drivers licenses are yet to be processed out of the 511,030 applicants
captured since 2011.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Motor
Vehicle Agency’s One-Stop Centre, Commissioner for Transportation,
Kayode Opeifa, who made the disclosure, said with the new one-stop
centre, the state Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) has further
raised its capacity to benchmark the best in the world in the provision
of cutting-edge vehicle documentation service and products.
He
said: “The building we are commissioning today will afford every
Lagosian the opportunity to come into this building, fill their forms,
access the internet, pay at the same point, visit the Motor Vehicle
Administration Agency, Vehicle Inspection Services, do their data
capture and get their temporary driver’s license the same day within a
maximum of two hours.
“Apart from that, we will also be able to
procure your plate numbers for your vehicle and your individual license
renewal and other services under motor vehicle administration and
drivers’ licenses.
“This is the way it should be and that is what we
are offering Lagosians. The temporary vehicle tag, the latest product
from the stable of the MVAA will also be issued at the One- Stop
Centre”.
Opeifa added that the agency had in the last three years,
captured about 50 per cent of the total vehicles in the country in the
unified driver licenses.
He said: “We have captured on our data base
511,030 applicants out of which we have 302,000 fully processed and
194,000 yet to be captured, the point that I’m making here is that we
still have 194,000 applicants who are yet to be processed and this is
not acceptable to us in Lagos State”.
