Boko Haram invades Miringa Market, kills 5, injures several others in Borno
MIRINGA, a village in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, came
under attack on Sunday, at about 2.00 p.m, when gunmen suspected to be
members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram stormed the village
market, where it attacked traders, killing five people and injuring
several others.
A ward councillor in
Biu town of the local government, who did not want his name in print
also confirmed the incident, adding that the gunmen came in two Hilux
vans with Islamic inscription, flags and began shooting sporadically at
people.
He said five have been confirmed dead, while others were taken to the General Hospital in Biu.
Another resident of Miringa Abdu Usman told the Nigerian Tribune that
there was pandemonium in Miringa village and many people had fled to the
mountain area for safety, others ran into the bush to seek refuge,
while others ran to Biu, the local government capital.
He, however,
said normalcy is being returned gradually, as some people are finding
their way back to town, as security operatives were detailed to the
area.
He said at the moment, there was rumour that seven people have
been killed, but many said it was five people, while several others
were injured.
“Whatever it is, this is worrisome. How can something
like this be happening when the Federal Government had told Nigerians
they were dialoguing with the Boko Haram sect?” He queried.
Our
source could not get confirmation from the police in Maiduguri as of the
time of filing this report, because all the phones of the Police Public
Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Gideon Jibrin, were not going through.
