Tanker driver, passenger burnt to ashes in Kogi auto-crash
An unidentified tanker driver and a passenger were reportedly burnt to
ashes at Felele area of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital on Wednesday
night following an auto-crash involving a truck and two cars.
Our
correspondent gathered on Thursday that the 33,000 litre truck which was
carrying diesel lost control and rammed into two cars parked at a hotel.
The vehicles were said to have gone into flames and also burnt the hotel.
It was also gathered that the state fire fighters battled the fire for over four hours before they could put it out.
The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yomi Awoniyi speaking at the
accident scene said the government under Captain Idris Wada would
continue to ensure the safety of the residents.
While decrying the
accident, he stated that it is a signal to the government to ensure that
laws guiding construction of structures near highways were strictly
enforced.
Awoniyi said, “This is not the first time this kind of
ghastly motor accident is happening on this highway and this may not be
the last. We must plan to forestall it through proper and prompt
development control.”
He called on road users to be more safety conscious and obey traffic regulations to reduce carnages on the roads.
The Managing Director of the burnt hotel, Mr. Michael Ayua said the
vehicle lost control and rammed into two vehicle parked in front of the
hotels.
While lamenting over the loss, he stated that he spent over N15m few years ago to build the hotel.
He also said that Motor spare parts dealers who are occupying the shop
attached to the hotel also lost their property worth several millions of
Naira.
