American comedian Joan Rivers has died in hospital in New York, her daughter Melissa said.
The 81-year-old star was rushed to the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in a critical condition on Thursday after having a heart attack in a doctor's office.
Earlier in the week her daughter urged the public to pray for her mother's recovery.
She said: ''I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family.
''We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.''
Her daughter Melissa (below) made the announcement earlier, saying:"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers.
"She passed peacefully at 1.17pm surrounded by family and close friends.
"My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother."
The New York state health department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Rivers' cardiac arrest during an outpatient procedure.
Spokesman James O'Hare said the department is looking into "the whole matter", declining to discuss specifics.
