Catholic Archbishop Rebukes Chris And Anita Oyakhilome

The recent divorce saga between founder of Believers Love World, a.k.a. Christ Embassy, Rev. Chris Oyakhilome, and his wife, Rev. Anita Odegwa Oyakhilome, is yet to die down.

Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie in a recent interview with Vanguard, condemned the divorce crisis which he described as ‘disturbing’.

According to him, it is an act of indiscipline for men of God to wash their dirty linen in the public.

Okogie said: “When the going was good, they took vows on the altar of God to stay together in sickness and in health, until death do them part. They promise to make one another faithful partner in the presence of God, their family and friends and vow to be each other’s faithful partner in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow. They promise to love one another unconditionally, to support each other, honor and respect and cherish themselves for as long as they both shall live.”
He asked what would be expected of ordinary church members, if the pastors who they look up to refuse to honour the vows they took at the altar.

He added that the so-called pastors are not practicing what they preach, saying, “The Bible says: ‘What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.’ So why are they putting asunder what the good Lord has joined together if they are men of God as they claim?”

He explained that true men of God are expected to forgive any and everything just as Christ forgives all in spite of their faith.
Okogie however blamed the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, for registering every organization which goes about deceiving people in the name of church.

According to him, there are several “useless” institutions that have been registered churches which are currently painting the Church of God in bad light.

Pastor Chris and wife, Rev. Anita Oyakhilome have been trending on social media following news of their divorce which surfaced on August 29, that Rev. Anita had filed a divorce suit at a UK court to end their 20-year-old marriage on the grounds of “adultery” and “unreasonable behaviour”. She said through her lawyers that she is done with Pastor Chris and there’s no hope of reconciliation.

Pastor Chris who finally spoke on the divorce suit, during on the evening of Sunday, September 7 during the monthly global communion service of the church said it is not biblical to divorce but if his wife insists on it, he could consider it as an option.
