Adamawa Acting Governor Swears In New SSG

he acting governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Ahmad Umaru Fintiri, on Wednesday performed his first function by appointing Professor Liman Tukur as the secretary to the state government.

Speaking shortly after the swearing-in of the SSG, the acting governor said the appointment of Tukur was based on his excellent record of service and glaring performance.

He added that the appointment of Tukur as the SSG was a step at ensuring that the government got the right hands as the onerous task of rebuilding the state needed competent hands like Tukur.

I have not sent my resignation letter to Governor Nyako – Ngilari

Confusion enveloped Adamawa State, less than 24 hours after governor Murtala Nyako was impeached by the State House of Assembly, as information emerged that Barrister Bala James Ngillari did not resign his appointment as the deputy governor of the state.

Sources close to the deputy governor’s office said the purported resignation letter read on the floor of the House by then speaker Hon. Fintiri, who is now the acting governor of the state, was obtained from Ngilari under duress.

The source disclosed to LEADERSHIP that the drama took place when the deputy speaker, now the acting speaker, Kwamoti Laori, went to the deputy governor’s official residence with an army of soldiers and ordered Ngillari to tender his resignation letter as directed from above.

The source added that deputy governor had never written any letter to the governor as demanded by the constitution to intimate him (former Governor Murtala Nyako) that he wanted to resign from the office.

While confirming the development, the embattled deputy governor said “the truth is that I have not sent any letter of resignation to the governor up till now, because the representative of the House only came to my house yesterday asking me to tender my resignation and asked me to address the letter to the speaker of the House, which I did”.

When asked whether he signed the letter under duress or not, Ngillari said what he did was to simply send the resignation to the speaker as requested.

The impeached governor, Murtala Nyako, has called for the reinstatement of his deputy as the governor of the state, following his illegal removal.

Nyako, who spoke through his press director in a press release made available to journalists in Yola, said: “Our attention has been drawn to the purported resignation of the deputy governor of Adamawa State, Barrister Bala James Ngillari, which was supposedly read on the floor of the State House of Assembly.”

While accepting the appointment as SSG, Tukur said the recent happenings in Adamawa was a democratic version of a revolution.

“The appointment is a challenge on me. I promise to be fair and equitable in discharging my duty,” Tukur said.

Before his appointment,, Tukur was a professor of Geography in the Department of Environmental Sciences , Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola.

Nasarawa impeachment: soldiers hold protesters hostage

Following the attempt by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly to serve impeachment notice on Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, concerned members of the public who came out in large numbers to demonstrate against the move were yesterday held hostage by soldiers.

The aggrieved persons who gathered at the premises of Akwanga local government headquarters about 9am intent upon demonstrating round the town were barred by soldiers who barricaded the gates, holding them hostage for hours.

Jacob Martins, a college student, who spoke with our reporter said armed soldiers and policemen locked the gates of the local government secretariat while the protesters were about to register their disapproval of the impeachment move before filing out to town for a peaceful protest.

The story was not different in Lafia, the state capital, where soldiers dispersed hundreds of protesters, mostly minors, youths and women, who were making their way to the state House of Assembly complex about midday.

In a swift reaction that averted a breakdown of law and order, however, the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isa Mustapha Agwai I, dispatched several teams of town criers on vans mounted with public address systems pleading and warning protesters to exercise restraint.

One of the protesters, Idi Umar, said the step taken by the Assembly was untimely and not in the best interest of the people of the state. “The PDP wasted 12 good years with nothing to show for it apart from brazen display of corruption. What moral standing do they merit to impeach Al-Makura who is the only governor we have ever had that is ready to work for the development of this state?” he queried.

In Keffi, headquarters of Keffi local government area, the story was not different as youths protesting the impeachment move came out in their numbers, but their attempt to demonstrate round the town was foiled by the presence of mean-looking soldiers deployed from the 177 Guards Brigade in the town.

The story was the same in Shabu, Lafia North development area; Keana, headquarters of Keana local government; and Wamba in Wamba local government.

Ngilari’s resignation illegal – Nyako’s aide

However, the director of press and public affairs to the former governor, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, said the resignation of the deputy governor was illegally done as he ought to have tendered his resignation letter to Governor Nyako.

In a statement made available yesterday, Sajoh said: “Our attention has been drawn to the purported resignation of the deputy governor of Adamawa State, Barr Bala James Ngillari, which was supposedly read on the floor of the State House of Assembly. We wish to state categorically that Section 306 (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, requires that the deputy governor resign not to the House of Assembly but to the governor.

“As at the time the supposed resignation was said to have been tendered in the House, Murtala H. Nyako was the governor of Adamawa State. No such letter was written to him, none was received by him and none was approved by him.

“It should therefore be known that, in the eyes of the law, the deputy governor has not resigned. Barr Bala James Ngillari is still the deputy governor of Adamawa State. This clarification is necessary to avert another subversion of the constitution since the other processes relating to the impeachment saga have all been in contravention of the constitution and the law.”

We are not rattled by impeachment, will soon reclaim our mandate – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamawa State chapter, yesterday condemned the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako, calling it a crude show of power by the PDP-led government to steal power from the party.

The party made the position known through a press release signed by the state publicity secretary of the party, Rev. Phineas Padio, and made available to newsmen in Yola.

The statement reads in part: “The so-called impeachment and resignation of the governor and the deputy governor respectively clearly signals a rape of democracy that must not be allowed to stand. To us and all other good citizens, Tuesday’s action clearly climaxed PDP’s planned invasion of our dear state and betrays their political brigandage just as it exposes their desperation to rule the state against popular wish.”
